This week, the children have been learning about Shrove Tuesday and have had the opportunity to mark the start of Lent, on Ash Wednesday.
During the assembly on Tuesday, Mr Coffey took centre stage and amazed all with his pancake flipping skills. For those of you who had children at the school last year, you will be pleased to know that the pancake was a resounding success, unlike the attempt last year! The children learnt about why Shrove Tuesday is celebrated.
On Ash Wednesday, children and staff in Reception to Year 6 went to Mass to begin the Lent period. The Mass was led by the Spiritual Life Committee, alongside Father Alan. They listened as Father Alan spoke about how we are forgiven for our sins. Towards the end, all children and staff had the sign of the cross put on their forehead with ashes. Hymns were sung as part of the Mass service. Children in Reception left Mass singing the hymns and stating how much they enjoyed the service. The Nursery children took part in their classroom and had the ashes put on their forehead.
In school, the children have all made Lenten promises. This is their act of ‘fasting’. The children will be spending the next 40 days praying, fasting and giving.
