Early Reading

St Joseph’s use the ‘Little Wandle Letters and Sounds’ phonics scheme of work to teach early reading, a DfE approved scheme.

Children in Reception and KS1 have a daily phonics lesson. They also participate in a guided reading session three times a week, in which they are explicitly taught the skills to read and have an opportunity to practice these skills. Children in Nursery focus on developing speaking and listening skills, laying the foundations for learning phonemes in Reception.

Children are also given the opportunity to develop a love of reading by reading or listening to fiction and non-fiction books in the classroom and the school library.
